ITIL 4 certification cost by level
Foundation
Foundation is the entry-level ITIL 4 certification. It covers the service value system, the four dimensions of service management, and the seven guiding principles. Two routes price it. PeopleCert direct booking is the floor. Accredited Training Organization bundles, with classroom or live-online instruction and exam voucher included, sit higher.
| Route | Cost | What is included |
|---|---|---|
| PeopleCert direct exam | £269 | Online proctored exam, single attempt |
| PeopleCert with Take2 resit | £358 | Exam plus one resit if needed |
| Self-paced ATO bundle | £425 to £695 | Recorded course, materials, exam voucher (Purple Griffon, Zindiak) |
| Live-online instructor-led ATO | £850 to £1,250 | 2 to 3 day virtual classroom plus exam (Learning Tree, ILX) |
| Classroom ATO bundle | £1,250 to £1,650 | In-person 2 to 3 day course, materials, exam (Oxford College, Global Knowledge) |
Self-directed learners with prior ITSM exposure typically take the PeopleCert direct route. Career switchers without prior service management context get more value from a structured ATO bundle. The price difference reflects instruction time, not exam content.
Prices are GBP excluding VAT for individual purchases. Corporate bundles attract VAT recoverable in the usual way.
Managing Professional
Managing Professional is a designation earned by completing four modules. The exam fee per module is set by PeopleCert, and most ATOs bundle each module as a separate course. The four modules:
| Module | PeopleCert exam | ATO bundled price |
|---|---|---|
| Create, Deliver and Support (CDS) | £420 | £1,150 to £1,650 |
| Drive Stakeholder Value (DSV) | £420 | £1,150 to £1,650 |
| High Velocity IT (HVIT) | £420 | £1,150 to £1,650 |
| Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI) | £420 | £1,150 to £1,650 |
| Total exam-only spend | £1,680 | £4,600 to £6,600 |
A Managing Professional in 2026, completed exam-only via PeopleCert with no instruction, costs roughly £1,680 in exam fees plus Foundation as prerequisite. With ATO bundling for all four modules, expect £4,600 to £6,600. Real-world spend including Foundation typically falls in the £1,800 to £4,500 bracket because most learners mix routes (instructor-led for modules new to them, self-paced or direct exam for ones close to existing experience).
Strategic Leader
Strategic Leader requires Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI) plus Digital and IT Strategy (DITS). DPI is shared with Managing Professional, so candidates pursuing both designations only pay for DITS additionally.
| Module | PeopleCert exam | ATO bundled price |
|---|---|---|
| Digital and IT Strategy (DITS) | £540 | £1,450 to £2,400 |
| Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI) | £420 | £1,150 to £1,650 |
| Total Strategic Leader | £960 | £2,600 to £4,050 |
Real-world Strategic Leader spend across both modules with mixed delivery typically falls in the £2,000 to £5,000+ bracket. The audience is IT directors and ITSM leads who want board-level credibility, not entry-level practitioners.
Master
ITIL 4 Master is achieved through portfolio submission and independent assessment rather than a taught course. The cost structure reflects this. PeopleCert charges roughly £1,200 to £1,650 for the assessment process. Preparation effort is the dominant cost, not the assessment fee. The candidate profile is unusual: 5+ years of senior ITSM work plus the prior certifications.
Legacy ITIL v3
ITIL v3 Practitioner and Expert searches still arrive in 2026, mostly from organisations and individuals certified in 2018 to 2020 who are now budgeting bridge or full requalification spend. Cost guidance is on a separate page because the decision is not per-level; it is which migration pathway to choose.
Recertification cycle
PeopleCert operates a continuing-professional-development credit model. Holders earn credits through professional activity (work experience, conference attendance, related certification) and submit them via the MyAxelos / PeopleCert subscription. The annual subscription cost is roughly £145 to £215 depending on tier. Where credits are insufficient or where a candidate elects full recertification, the original exam fee applies.
Most enterprise programmes budget recertification cycle from year 3 onward at 8 to 14% of the year-one training spend. Ignored often, but real.
Which level is enough for your role
The honest answer depends on what the role demands.
- Foundation suffices for awareness across IT staff who need to operate within ITIL processes without owning them. Service desk analysts, second-line engineers, project managers in regulated IT environments.
- Managing Professional matters for ITSM leads, problem managers, change managers, and senior service owners who design and run the processes. The MP designation is a credibility signal in regulated enterprise IT recruitment.
- Strategic Leaderis positional. IT directors who need to defend the ITSM investment to a board, or who represent IT in M&A and audit contexts, get value from DITS specifically. Most IT operations roles do not need it.
Foundation has the best individual ROI on cost per credibility gain. Managing Professional has the best programme ROI when the organisation needs ITSM leadership. Strategic Leader is a board-credibility investment, sized accordingly.
