ITIL 4 certification cost by level

What an individual learner pays for each ITIL 4 certification level in 2026, in GBP and USD. PeopleCert direct exam fees alongside published Accredited Training Organization bundle prices, dated. For organisational rollout costs see enterprise adoption.
Section 01

Foundation

Foundation is the entry-level ITIL 4 certification. It covers the service value system, the four dimensions of service management, and the seven guiding principles. Two routes price it. PeopleCert direct booking is the floor. Accredited Training Organization bundles, with classroom or live-online instruction and exam voucher included, sit higher.

ITIL 4 Foundation (UK, June 2026)
RouteCostWhat is included
PeopleCert direct exam£269Online proctored exam voucher, single attempt
PeopleCert with Take2 resit£358Exam plus one resit if needed
Self-paced ATO bundle£280 to £740Recorded course, materials, exam voucher (Zindiak, Purple Griffon)
Live-online instructor-led ATO£1,450 to £1,5302 to 3 day virtual classroom plus exam (Oxford College, Learning Tree)
Classroom ATO bundle£975 to £1,650In-person 2 to 3 day course, materials, exam (Purple Griffon, Oxford College)

Self-directed learners with prior ITSM exposure typically take the PeopleCert direct route. Career switchers without prior service management context get more value from a structured ATO bundle. The price difference reflects instruction time, not exam content.

Prices are GBP excluding VAT for individual purchases. Corporate bundles attract VAT recoverable in the usual way.

Section 02

Managing Professional

Managing Professional is a designation earned by completing four modules. PeopleCert makes accredited training mandatory on every module above Foundation, so there is no exam-only route: each module is bought as a course (an ATO bundle or PeopleCert Official eLearning) with the exam included. PeopleCert prices its eLearning uniformly across the modules. The four modules:

ITIL 4 Managing Professional modules (UK, June 2026, inc VAT)
ModulePeopleCert eLearningTraining
Create, Deliver and Support (CDS)£1,359Required
Drive Stakeholder Value (DSV)£1,359Required
High Velocity IT (HVIT)£1,359Required
Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI)£1,359Required
All four modules£5,436Total via PeopleCert eLearning

Because training is mandatory above Foundation, a Managing Professional cannot be completed exam-only. Via PeopleCert eLearning the four modules total about £5,436 inclusive of VAT, plus Foundation as prerequisite. With classroom ATO delivery the figure is higher; real-world spend across the four modules typically falls in the £5,400 to £6,600bracket depending on delivery format and provider. The £682 PeopleCert retake price applies only once a module's training is already completed.

Section 03

Strategic Leader

Strategic Leader requires Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI) plus Digital and IT Strategy (DITS). DPI is shared with Managing Professional, so candidates pursuing both designations only pay for DITS additionally.

ITIL 4 Strategic Leader (UK, June 2026, inc VAT)
ModulePeopleCert eLearningTraining
Digital and IT Strategy (DITS)£1,359Required
Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI)£1,359Required
Total Strategic Leader£2,718Both modules via PeopleCert eLearning

Both Strategic Leader modules require accredited training. Via PeopleCert eLearning the two modules total about £2,718 inclusive of VAT; with classroom ATO delivery, real-world spend typically falls in the £2,700 to £5,000+ bracket. Candidates pursuing both Managing Professional and Strategic Leader sit DPI only once. The audience is IT directors and ITSM leads who want board-level credibility, not entry-level practitioners.

Section 04

Master

ITIL 4 Master is achieved through portfolio submission and independent assessment rather than a taught course. The cost structure reflects this: PeopleCert quotes the Master assessment fee on application rather than as a published list price. Preparation effort is the dominant cost, not the assessment fee. The candidate profile is unusual: 5+ years of senior ITSM work plus the prior certifications.

Section 05

Legacy ITIL v3

ITIL v3 Practitioner and Expert searches still arrive in 2026, mostly from organisations and individuals certified in 2018 to 2020 who are now budgeting bridge or full requalification spend. Cost guidance is on a separate page because the decision is not per-level; it is which migration pathway to choose.

Section 06

Recertification cycle

ITIL 4 certifications now carry a three-year renewal cycle that applies to all levels, Foundation included. Holders keep a certification current through the PeopleCert Plus membership, earning continuing-professional-development credits through professional activity (work experience, conference attendance, related certification). The membership costs roughly £100 / yr (USD 133). Where credits are insufficient or where a candidate elects full recertification, the original exam fee applies.

Most enterprise programmes budget recertification cycle from year 3 onward at 8 to 14% of the year-one training spend. Ignored often, but real.

Section 07

Which level is enough for your role

The honest answer depends on what the role demands.

  • Foundation suffices for awareness across IT staff who need to operate within ITIL processes without owning them. Service desk analysts, second-line engineers, project managers in regulated IT environments.
  • Managing Professional matters for ITSM leads, problem managers, change managers, and senior service owners who design and run the processes. The MP designation is a credibility signal in regulated enterprise IT recruitment.
  • Strategic Leaderis positional. IT directors who need to defend the ITSM investment to a board, or who represent IT in M&A and audit contexts, get value from DITS specifically. Most IT operations roles do not need it.

Foundation has the best individual ROI on cost per credibility gain. Managing Professional has the best programme ROI when the organisation needs ITSM leadership. Strategic Leader is a board-credibility investment, sized accordingly.
